Easy Old Fashioned Fruit Cobbler Recipe

Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around family camping trips. Every single time we went camping, without fail, my parents would make fruit cobbler in their old cast iron Dutch oven over the campfire. The smell of that bubbling fruit and golden brown crust would drift through the campsite, and I’d sit there impatiently waiting for it to cool just enough to eat.

Now when I make this same easy fruit cobbler recipe, I’m transported right back to those evenings under the stars. This delicious dessert is incredibly versatile and works with whatever fruit you have on hand – whether it’s fresh peaches in summer or apples during harvest time. It’s the perfect dessert for feeding a crowd at family gatherings or when you just want a classic dessert on a Sunday evening.

Tips for Making Dutch Oven Fruit Cobbler

The beauty of this great recipe is how forgiving it is compared to other fruit desserts that require a pie crust or biscuit dough. You don’t need a pastry cutter or cold butter because the batter creates its own cake-like topping as it bakes. The melted butter works its magic, rising to create that perfect buttery crust we all love.

I’ve made this with every kind of fruit you can imagine and different types of fruits work beautifully. Stone fruit like fresh peaches are amazing, especially with a little cinnamon. Summer fruits like berries turn this into something special, and apples work wonderfully for those cozy fall evenings.

Ingredients:

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or 1½ cups all purpose flour if using sourdough starter)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder

Wet Ingredients:

  • 2 cups milk (or 1½ cups milk if using sourdough starter) – room temperature works best
  • 1 cup sourdough starter (optional – see notes)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract (optional – great with cherry)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional – great with peaches)

Other:

  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 2 cups fruit (use any fruit – cherries, peaches, apples, berries, etc.)
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup fruit juice (for extra flavor)

This simple recipe uses basic ingredients that most people already have at home. The simple ingredients are part of what makes it so appealing – no need for special equipment or hard-to-find items. If you want less sugar, you can reduce it slightly, but I find the sweetness balances perfectly with tart fruits like cherries or apples.

Sourdough Variation:

Want to try something different? Replace 1/2 cup of the flour with 1 cup of sourdough starter and reduce the milk to 1 1/2 cups. This creates the most incredible depth of flavor and turns your regular fruit cobbler into something really special.

Tools:

  • Large bowl for mixing dry ingredients
  • Liquid measuring cup
  • 12-inch deep Dutch oven or 11×13-inch baking dish

How to Make Dutch Oven Fruit Cobbler

Mix all your dry ingredients together in a large bowl – this is the best way to ensure everything is evenly distributed. In another bowl, combine the milk mixture with vanilla and any extracts you’re using. If you’re adding sourdough starter, whisk it right into the milk mixture until smooth.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until you have a smooth batter. Don’t worry about overmixing – this batter is very forgiving and creates its own top crust as it bakes.

Melt your butter and pour it into your greased baking dish or Dutch oven. Pour the batter right on top of the melted butter, but don’t stir it! This special trick is what creates that golden buttery crust.

Scatter your fruit mixture evenly on top of the batter. Add some fruit juice if you have it – this makes the fruit filling more gooey and flavorful. The fruit will sink slightly but will bubble up around the edges as it bakes.

Bake at 350°F for about 40 minutes until the cake-like topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling. Let it cool just a bit before serving. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whip cream on top for an extra special treat.

Storage and Serving:

This baked cobbler keeps well covered at room temperature for a couple days, or you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, wrap individual servings in plastic wrap and freeze them for up to three months.

The recipe serves about 8 people, making it perfect when you’re cooking for a crowd. You can also make individual cobblers in smaller ramekins if you prefer individual portions – just adjust the bake time accordingly.

Peach Cobbler: Use fresh peaches with a teaspoon of cinnamon for that classic summer flavor – this peach cobbler recipe is perfect for when peaches are in season.

Apple Cobbler: Perfect for fall – use sliced apples with cinnamon and a touch of lemon juice for brightness.

Berry Cobbler: Try a triple berry cobbler mixing different fresh berries like strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries for a colorful fruit dessert.

Blackberry Cobbler: Use fresh or frozen blackberries for a traditional blackberry cobbler that rivals any blackberry pie.

Blueberry Cobbler: Sweet blueberries make this one of the best easy summer desserts you can imagine.

Mixed Fruit: A great way to use whatever fruit is available – combine any kinds of fruit like peaches and berries, or apples and cranberries.

This versatile recipe works no matter what time of year it is or what your favorite fruit happens to be. Every version I’ve tried has been delicious, and it always reminds me of those special family camping trips where dessert was the highlight of every evening.
