This recipe comes straight from one of my great-grandmother’s recipe books. Every time I make these perfect blueberry muffins I think of her kitchen and her smile.

There’s just something about homemade blueberry muffins that makes my heart happy.

Tips for Making Old Fashioned Blueberry Muffins

These muffins come together so easily and make a wonderful breakfast or healthy snack. You can use any fresh berries in these muffins. I have used raspberries and serviceberries with delicious results!

These simple ingredients are probably already in your pantry, so spend a few minutes and enjoy some old fashioned muffins.

Ingredients:

Eggs: These add protein and give the muffins their fluffy texture. Farm fresh or store bought large eggs work great!

Milk: I like to use whole milk in this recipe, but any kind of milk will work just fine.

Butter or Olive Oil: I like to use either melted unsalted butter or good quality olive oil in this recipe. Vegetable oil would also work. You can also substitute applesauce for the oil to reduce the fat in these muffins.

Flour: Use a good quality all-purpose flour in this recipe for best results. You could substitute 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour in this recipe for added nutrition.

Baking Powder: The baking powder in this recipe helps the muffins rise in the oven for that light fluffy texture that everyone loves.

Salt: Only 1/2 teaspoon salt in this recipe brings out the other flavors without a bunch of added salt. I like to use a good quality salt like Redmon Real Salt.

Sugar: Unlike some other muffin recipes and grocery store muffins, this recipe only has 2 tablespoons of white sugar. If you are trying to reduce your sugar intake, this recipe is a great option. You can also substitute brown sugar to add some unique flavor.

Blueberries: Fresh blueberries work best in this recipe. If you don’t have blueberries, you can use any fresh berry like raspberries or blackberries. I have also used serviceberries (also called juneberries or saskatoon berries) with delicious results!

In a separate bowl, mix the lightly beaten eggs, 1 cup milk and melted butter or oil. Add the small bowl of wet ingredients to the dry mixture.

Stir the milk mixture and the flour mixture well until you achieve a smooth texture.

Gently fold in the berries taking care not to over mix.

Spoon the muffin batter into well-greased muffin tins or paper liners. You can also use silicone muffin cups on a baking sheet. This recipe uses a 12-cup muffin tin.

Bake 15-20 minutes until golden brown in a oven preheated to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cool the muffins on a wire rack in a single layer and enjoy! These muffins make a wonderful breakfast served with fresh fruit. They are also an excellent snack and can be packed into lunches easily.

These muffins can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.

The muffins also freeze well. Just wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, place them in freezer bags, and place in the freezer. They are best if eaten within 3-4 months.
