Roasted Turkey
We have tried all the fad turkey cooking methods. I have fried, brined, and smoked my turkey. I have cooked turkey breast in the slow cooker with cranberry sauce.
All of those methods turned out ok, but they require quite a bit of hands-on time, sometimes longer cooking time, and lots of effort. Honestly, the best tasting turkey cooking method (and the easiest) is using the simple oven bag to make a roast turkey.
It may not fancy, but this turkey recipe makes a moist, delicious, perfectly cooked whole bird every time without fail. Even the white meat is moist and delicious. Roasting a whole turkey in an oven bag is definitely my go-to method for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Make sure you take your frozen turkey out of the freezer about a week before Thanksgiving so that it is thawed and ready to be roasted on the big day! If you have a big turkey, it may even take more than a week to thaw!
Stuffing
From scratch stuffing is so delicious and relatively easy to make. Sure the boxed stuffing is quick and easy. But you can’t compare to the flavors of fresh herbs, butter, onion, and garlic. Use your own home-made bread to make bread cubes and you’ll avoid all the artificial ingredients too. You can also use homemade cornbread to make this recipe into cornbread stuffing.
Compliment your turkey dinner with a casserole dish full of from-scratch stuffing.
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
The mashed potatoes and gravy have always been my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal. Well, maybe a close second to the pumpkin pie. I love from-scratch real mashed potatoes. When you top these with from-scratch gravy made from chicken or turkey broth it’s the perfect compliment to the turkey and stuffing.
Make sure you make enough gravy to pour some over your juicy turkey and stuffing too. You can’t have too much gravy at your holiday table.
Cast Iron Green Bean Casserole
This delicious recipe is a twist on traditional green bean casserole. Instead of topping the casserole with crispy fried onions, I like to top it with crispy fried bacon! The bacon adds wonderful flavor.
No canned cream of mushroom soup in this recipe. From scratch cream of mushroom soup, home canned green beans, and bacon prepared and baked in a cast iron skillet. It is always one of the favorite side dishes on our Thanksgiving table.
This recipe can be partially prepared the day before and baked the next day to save time.
Rolls
You can’t have a turkey dinner without fluffy, warm rolls. This recipe works great for me every time and delivers rolls that are both fluffy, but substantial enough to make a turkey sandwich. They are also wonderful with some butter and homemade jam slathered on them.
Cranberry Sauce
There’s something about turkey meat and cranberry sauce that is just beautiful. This homemade cranberry sauce is so much better than the canned sauce. With a hint of orange from orange zest and cinnamon and nutmeg, this sauce is delicious all on it’s own.
This cranberry sauce can be made one or two days before Thanksgiving and stored in the refrigerator till your meal is ready. Spend less time in the kitchen on your holiday by making this ahead of time.
Making from-scratch cranberry sauce will send your Thanksgiving dinner to the next level.
Fruit Dip
This is a classic fruit dip that my mother makes for special occasions. It’s always a part of our holiday menu. It is super quick to make and can be made one or two days ahead of time. Add some sliced apples, grapes, pineapple, and strawberries to a serving tray with this dip for a perfect side dish to your Thanksgiving meal.
Honey Sweetened Pumpkin Pie
If you like to reduce your white sugar intake, this is a great dessert option that tastes delicious! This classic pumpkin pie is sweetened with honey. Use a homemade crust or a store bought crust. This pie can be made the day before Thanksgiving and stored in the refrigerator until it’s time for your special dinner. Make sure to add a big dollop of whipped cream! When it comes to Thanksgiving desserts, pumpkin pie is always at the top of my list.
Other common Thanksgiving table fair like candied sweet potatoes, or brussels sprouts, would also be a great addition to this classic Thanksgiving dinner. Use these recipes and add your own favorites to make Thanksgiving menu your family will remember.
